Philip Allen (working with Jake Weltzin), "The role of precipitation in recruitment of chestnut oak, flowering dogwood, and red maple seedlings," part of a large Throughfall Displacement Experiment wherein research plots receive either ambient precipitation, or one-third more or one-third less than ambient precipitation. Phil is also an intern on the TDE.
Sara Drake (working with Jake Weltzin), "Chinese privet in natural ecosystems: assessment of impact and potential techniques for control," at Ijams Nature Center. Sara is investigating the impact of this non-native, invasive woody plant on the structure of the herbaceous plant community by conducting removal experiments. She is also investigating the potential for excluding privet from experimental plots by planting native trees at different densities. Sara is also conducting an assessment of invasive species at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory National Environmental Research Park.
Chuck Price (working with Jake Weltzin), "Evaluation of techniques for prairie restoration in Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park." Chuck is collecting and analyzing data on herbaceous plant species density, cover, and biomass within experimental research plots established by the Park Service in 1995 in Cades Cove. The purpose of the experiment has been to investigate the efficacy of different prairie restoration techniques, including controlled burning, herbicide application, and reseeding. Effectiveness of treatment will be evaluated in terms of success of establishment and production of seeded species, and changes in biological diversity. |
